I probably posted this a long time ago, but here it is again. I once emailed a new author called Eldon Thompson after reading his story. This was before I stopped reading his series as he was using mistakes that I was using like too much description and copying his favorite author's story. The last influence he left on me was a great cover art and the creation of Colin, Barzan, Alven, and Reedson, most who have already tragically fallen and some words on motivation.

Motivation for Characters
1) What does the character want?
2) Why do they want it?
3) How does the character respond to stress/life-death situtions/defensive mechanisms

Stick your character in a tree.
Throw things at him.
Watch what he does.
