Grayla wasted no time in serving first Licia then the invalid. Rather than serving the mistress of the house a properly "ladylike" portion, the servant took her mistress' demeanor as a cue to give her a decent amount of everything on the tray. She had always thought the gentry's ladies' habit of pretending they didn't eat like a horse by stuffing themselves full before a meal in company was somewhat silly. Miss Licia looked like she worked just as hard as her servants and would require a decent amount of fuel to run on.
Once Licia and Hanvex were served Grayla took a generous portion for herself and sat primly to eat, one eye on Licia for cues.

As if he was made from eggshells, Hanvex carefully hiked himself upright and used the head board as a back rest, a pillow between him and the wood. He looked much better and felt as if a weight had been lifted from his mind. The pressure brought on by the 'thing' that had attacked him psychically was gone. He knew that whatever it was, it lurked some distance away yet.
Hanvex uttered a soft "Thanks," as he accepted his plate from Grayla. As she sat nearby, he contemplated her face with its studiously blank features. Something went on in that mind and the fact that it was closed to him caused him some concern.
His plate held some delicious little sandwiches and he ate delicately, even though he was ravenous. Nanny's gimlet eye watched from the doorway. From what Hanvex could see, she only had eyes for him. Convicted without a trial -- Hanvex thought ruefully.
To Licia, he remarked, "These are marvellous. What kind of meat is in them?"

Licia swallowed a mouthful before answering.
"I think it's partridge. I certainly saw some hanging in the game larder this morning. It's lamb for mains don't know about pudding." She picked up the top peice of bread on one of the sandwiches and regarded it critically, then shrugged. Telling the difference between game birds was beyond her.
"What have we got to go with the lamb, Grayla?" Licia asked.

Grayla had been taught that speaking while one's mouth was full of mouthwateringly delicious partridge was impolite to say the least, and that put her in a slight quandry. There was too much partridge in there to swallow safely without chewing it first and her taste buds cried out against chewing too quickly, but her mistress wanted an answer.
She compromised, putting her plate down and fetching the tray over to Licia while still chewing to show the mistress instead of trying to talk.

"Thank you," said Licia, lifting the lids on the dishes one after the other.
"We have lamb, with one of those interesting sauces, lord knows whats in it, and new potatoes, carrots and beans, all out of the gardens." She picked up the last lid. "Ooooh, pudding involved chocolate. Good thing I've been walking today." She waved Grayla back to her chair with a nod.

As athletically slim as he naturally was, Hanvex hadn't benefitted from a life on the road. His ribs stuck out a little, even though he was well muscled. A few extra pounds or so couldn't hurt him and he never had to worry about his weight getting ahead of him.
He found himself critically examing Licia's form and wondering what she was worried about, when Nanny cleared her throat impressively. Hanvex gave her a sheepish grin and became tremendously interested in his delicious partridge sandwich. At the same time, his thoughts kept returning to Licia's non-existant weight problem -- well, that and other more personal things.
Eventually, Hanvex decided that he'd better wrestle his thoughts back to the meal in front of him before he became dangerously overheated. In fact, he was beginning to find the air in the room getting close even then. Nanny wasn't helping him much either. She persisted in eyeing him as if he was a fox strolling around her hen house whistling.

Licia finished her starter and, to Nanny's resigned eye rolling, got up to put her plate back on the tray, then steal a fingerful of chocolate sauce. She sensed the disapproval and scurried back to her seat.
"How long had you been working in that Inn?" she asked Grayla. "I've heard the staff turnover is fairly high."

Grayla nodded. "I have been there only a few seven-days. Most seem not to last even that long. I don't know why, though. The master is strict but not harsh."

"That's what I've heard," said Licia. She knew some of the girls left because they didn't like the 'feel' of the place. Some, she suspected were sold to bored merchants, one or two had just disappeared.
"Did you see any of the girls after they left?"

Grayla shook her head. It was that fact that had been the reason for taking the job there to begin with. Too many girls had just disappeared. Any low-paying task would have a steady turnover, but there weren't that many jobs a woman could aspire to... and in most cases the girl would still be around the town. The inn's staff had almost exclusively consisted of girls from other places... those who would be assumed to have returned to those places if they disappeared.

Licia sniffed suspitiously. It had been said about town that Licia was chronically nosey, but more often than not she found out something that would help her business. She'd help the townsfolk out where she could, and every now and again, she'd come across something nasty, like this Inn.
Nanny considered her mistress a one woman crusade against anything that caught her attention. She supported her whole heartedly, as did all Licia's employees, but she couldn't help wish Licia would just settle down and marry a nice boy.
